OBITUARY NOTICE:
Father Arthur Gouthro, SA – Franciscan Friar of the Atonement
(February 3, 1938 – April 6, 2024)

Father Arthur Gouthro, SA was born on February 3, 1938 to Alexander and Jean MacMurray Gouthro in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

He graduated from MacDonald High School in Dominion, NS in 1956. He attended Nova Scotia Teacher College in 1958 followed by two years of teaching in the public schools in that province.

In September 1958, Fr. Arthur joined the Friars of the Atonement. He received the habit in July 1960 and professed first vows in July 1961. Fr. Arthur professed final vows in August 1964. He was ordained to the priesthood in May 1969 by Bishop W.E. Power at Sacred Heart Church, Sydney, NS.

Fr. Arthur ministered for the Friars at parishes in the United States and Canada, including St. John’s Church, Mahopac, NY; and Chapel of Our Savior, Brockton, MA. He is a former Director of the Graymoor Ecumenical Institute in Garrison, NY. Fr. Arthur was the pastor of St. Paul’s Church and St. Bridget’s Church, both in Nova Scotia. From 2005-2012, Fr. Arthur was Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph the Worker parish in Richmond, BC. He retired from full-time ministry in 2012 and came to reside at St. Paul Friary at Graymoor in 2017.

Fr. Arthur passed into eternal life on April 6, 2024 at Cabrini of Westchester Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. He is survived by his brothers Gary Gouthro, Eugene MacLeod and John MacLeod, and sister Charlene MacNeil. Fr. Arthur was predeceased by his sister Sandra Cogswell.

A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9th at the Chapel of St. Anthony at the St. Paul Friary at Graymoor.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place Wednesday, April 10th at 11 a.m., also to be held at the Chapel of St. Anthony at the St. Paul Friary at Graymoor. Interment in the Friars’ cemetery will immediately follow.
