On June 5, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement joyfully welcomed benefactors to Graymoor for our annual Heritage and Benefactor Appreciation Day – a heartfelt celebration of faith, community and gratitude.
The day began with a reception and Mass at the St. Anthony Shrine, celebrated by Minister General Fr. Emil Tomaskovic, SA. Following the liturgy, friends and benefactors gathered along the St. Anthony Prayer Walkway, where Fr. Emil offered a special blessing of the commemorative bricks and bench plaques – each a symbol of love, remembrance and devotion, laid at the feet of St. Anthony on the Holy Mountain.
After the blessing, guests joined the Friars for a luncheon, where updates were shared on Graymoor’s ministries and ongoing mission to bring healing and hope to a hurting world.
For 65 years, the St. Anthony Shrine has stood as a beacon of peace and prayer, drawing pilgrims – especially each June, when the Church celebrates St. Anthony. In 2016, this sacred site was further enriched by the addition of the St. Anthony Prayer Walkway. The path, leading to the altar, is paved with bricks engraved with the names of loved ones and intentions. It remains a beautiful and lasting expression of faith, gratitude and intercession.
In 2022, bench plaques were added, offering yet another meaningful way to honor and remember loved ones.
Each year, the Blessing of the Bricks and Bench Plaques Ceremony reminds us of the deep connections between faith, memory and community. It is a sacred moment when the Friars lift up in prayer all those commemorated along the walkway, and all the generous benefactors who make the mission of Graymoor possible.
Whether through prayer, pilgrimage, or a brick laid in love, the St. Anthony Shrine and Prayer Walkway continues to be a place where faith takes root and hope finds a home.
