A public gathering unfolds in Lima’s Plaza San Martín, with flags, banners, and speeches filling the historic square.

Recently, Fr. Ken Cienik, SA, traveled to Lima, Peru, accompanied by Br. Kevin Elphick, TSA, to spend time with the Friars and to meet new Postulants.

A spiritual highlight of the visit was the privilege of praying at the tombs of Saint Rose of Lima and Saint Martin de Porres, two great saints whose lives continue to inspire the faithful.

The language barrier didn’t diminish the joy and richness of the visit experiences. Fr. Ken witnessed firsthand the vibrant life of the formation community, led with dedication by Fr. Dan Callahan, SA. Under Fr. Dan’s guidance, the junior professed friars, postulants, and inquirers are growing in their vocation and preparing for lives of service.

Fr. Ken and Fr. Dan Offer Blessings and Strengthen Bonds with Friars in Formation

The friars share a joyful moment in front of Lima’s historic Archbishop’s Palace.

The visit coincided with Peru’s 204th anniversary of independence, filling the streets with celebrations and political demonstrations. Amid the bustling energy, many people approached Fr. Ken and Fr. Dan seeking blessings, which they graciously offered to each person. At times, the lines seemed endless, recalling the Ash Wednesday crowds who come forward in faith.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the trip was the chance to connect more deeply with the friars in formation. They are a hopeful sign for the future of the Society of the Atonement in South America, especially as vocations in North America have become less common.

Faith and Fraternity in Lima

The timing of the visit also carried special significance as the newly elected Pope Leo XIV embodies the connection between North and South America, having been born in the United States and served as a missionary priest and bishop in Peru.

Though the trip was brief, the time spent in Lima offered a rich experience of faith, fraternity, and hope. The seeds planted there promise to grow and bear fruit for the mission of the Society of the Atonement for years to come.
