OBITUARY NOTICE:
Deacon James W. Flannery, Jr., TSA – Franciscan Friar of the Atonement
(1946 – 2021)

The Friars of the Atonement mourn the loss of our brother Deacon James (Jim) W. Flannery, Jr., TSA, who passed from this life on Monday, July 26, 2021.

Deacon Jim joined the Fraternity of the Society of the Atonement in January of 2020, but his great love of Graymoor and the Friars of the Atonement spanned most of his life.

Assigned to Saint Bernard Church in Levittown, New York, Deacon Jim served also as the Chaplain for the Oceanside Fire Department since 1989.

Deacon Jim earned a B.A. from Saint Joseph College in Brooklyn and an M.A. from Saint Joseph Seminary. On May 23, 1987, he was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Rockville Centre and later served as the Director of Deacons for the Diocese. He taught elementary and high school students and was involved in youth ministry for more than two decades.

Deacon Jim married his beloved wife Marie in 1974, who passed earlier this year. They were blessed with a lovely daughter, Kellyanne, and two beautiful grandchildren. Throughout his life, Deacon Jim gave faithful witness to the Gospel and touched the lives of many.

Visiting hours for Deacon Jim will be held on Sunday, August 1, from 2 to 8 pm at Charles J. O’Shea Funeral home in Wantagh, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 2, at 9:30 am at St. Bernard Church in Levittown, N.Y. For more information, please visit the O’Shea Funeral Home’s website.
