The Light of Christmas
In our society, and in many others, lighted candles are used when one or more of three things are present: joy, devotion and love. We light candles at birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, and, of course, at Mass each week.
There’s something about a candle’s flame that stirs something deep within us. Perhaps it’s the gentle, dancing light that refuses to be extinguished, even when a whirling breeze tries to put it out. Maybe it’s the warmth it offers, quietly sharing its heat with anyone who draws near.
Or perhaps the greatest gift of a candle is its light – how even the smallest flame can push back what seems like infinite darkness.
It’s fitting, then, that the purple and pink candles we’ve lit throughout Advent represent not only the coming of Christ, but also the light He brings into the world – a light that dispels the shadows of fear, hatred and despair.
Darkness often seems ever-present in our world and in our hearts. There are times when it feels like it’s winning, when hope seems dim. Yet Scripture reminds us of a truth that never fades: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
That is God’s promise, and it is promise we can trust. The light has triumphed before, and it will triumph again and again.
So, if you have lit candles during Advent, or if you light a candle this Christmas, let it be a reminder of Jesus: the true Light of the world. His light can pierce through any darkness, calm any fear and heal any sorrow.
And always remember – that same light lives within you. Let it shine brightly in your words, your actions and your love for others. Share that light with the love of Jesus in your heart.
From all of us, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, may the light of Christ fill your hearts and homes this season.
We wish you a very Merry and blessed Christmas, one abundant with peace, hope, love and the light of our newborn Savior.
