As summer winds down and September approaches, there’s so much to reflect on. The kids are heading back to school; the leaves will soon begin to change colors. Autumn is at our doorstep.
Yet, September is meaningful in so many other ways. It’s the month during which the Church celebrates the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, and our nation observes National Recovery Month.
Let’s begin with the feast. At first, the phrase “Triumph of the Cross” might sound like a contradiction. How can there be triumph in an instrument of torture and execution? From a human point of view, the cross symbolizes defeat, pain and humiliation. We might ask, “Why did the Lord, the Most High God, die like this? Could there have been another way?”
St. John offers an answer: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.” Love doesn’t seek shortcuts – love gives everything. We recognize that truth in everyday life: a mother sacrificing for her children, a soldier laying down his life for others. And God’s love is even greater. He entered our brokenness, bore our suffering and ultimately, He died for us.
The least we can do in return is live for Him – and that is the true triumph of the Cross.
September also draws our attention to the power of recovery. Whether it’s healing from addiction or walking the path of sobriety, recovery is a vital and courageous journey. For over a century, Graymoor has been a place of transformation. Through St. Christopher’s Inn, our inpatient treatment program, along with daily meetings, retreats and the dedicated work of the Friars, thousands of lives have been renewed on the Holy Mountain.
We invite you to be part of that mission by joining us on Sunday, September 21st for our fourth annual Be the Bridge: Walk for Recovery, held at the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. All proceeds go directly to support the men in recovery at St. Christopher’s Inn.
So, as September unfolds – whether you’re reflecting on the Cross or walking alongside those on the road to recovery – embrace the change this season brings. Receive the grace God offers. Rejoice in His power to heal and transform.
Because His love truly triumphs over all.
I enjoy every thing you post
