On Sunday, October 20, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement welcomed Bishop Gerardo Colacicco to the Holy Mountain. He celebrated Mass to open the Friars’ Chapter of Mats, an event that dates to St. Francis of Assisi.
St. Francis emphasized the importance of community and periodically invited his friars to Assisi for informal meetings. The brothers would talk about their ministry and how they could better live their charism. With no buildings large enough to house them, the friars slept outdoors on simple straw mats, hence the name “Chapter of Mats.”
For centuries, the Friars of the Atonement have continued this practice as a living reminder of their founder’s fraternal spirit.
Throughout the weekend with Bishop Colacicco, the Friars joined in communal prayer, shared reflections, and renewed their commitment to the work of reconciliation. The time together offered moments of laughter, gratitude, and quiet listening to the Spirit’s voice.
As the Friars dispersed to their various ministries, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose: to be instruments of healing and unity in a divided world.
May the spirit of the Chapter of Mats continue to inspire all who seek peace, hope, and “at-one-ment” in their own lives.
