The hills and valleys are aglow with autumn colors as fall unfolds, and Graymoor is no exception. The Holy Mountain has become a sea of red and gold, a fitting backdrop for this season when we celebrate our beloved St. Francis of Assisi.

I must admit, Francis has always been my favorite Saint. Our Founder, Servant of God Father Paul Wattson, once said, “Francis found joy not in what he possessed, but in what he gave away for love’s sake.” I believe St. Francis would have loved Graymoor, where the poor and disadvantaged have always found care and compassion.

By God’s grace, we are blessed with St. Christopher’s Inn, a place where men can recover, heal and begin their lives anew. The Inn beautifully reflects St. Francis’ mission, for he embraced the outcast and those whom society pushed aside.

Our Holy Mountain Franciscan Retreat Center also carries forward his spirit, providing a place where seekers can deepen their relationship with God and with one another. Not long ago – just before the young St. Carlo Acutis was canonized a few weeks ago – a high school senior came on retreat by himself.

I had the chance to spend some time with him, and I was deeply moved by his enthusiasm for the faith and his genuine desire to know Christ more fully. It was both remarkable and encouraging.

St. Francis is also remembered for his love of animals and creation, seeing in them a reflection of God’s beauty. Each October, we keep that spirit alive by welcoming people from near and far to bring their pets to Graymoor for a special blessing at our outdoor shrine.

Volumes have been written about the life and teachings of St. Francis, but perhaps his own words say it best: “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”

What a simple, yet profound rule of life for every Christian.
