Spiritual Summer Refreshment
Greetings from Fr. Bob ...
Just inside the inner doors of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Atonement, there is a book where people can write comments about their visit to the Holy Mountain. Recently, I was chatting with a woman who was sharing her own thoughts about her visit in the book. She said, "Reading the comments of others nearly brought me to tears. It is amazing that so many people see Graymoor not only as a place for solace, but truly as a sanctuary for peace and reflection."
I didn't tell her at the time how much her thoughts touched me. Over the years, I too, have experienced these same feelings so many times. Hearing the same story time and again always reminds me of the special place people have in their hearts for Graymoor.
It is truly a blessing for us all. We friars are not surprised when we hear such testaments because we have experienced the uniqueness of this mountain that people have come to call "Holy." For so long, we have been blessed with visits from homeless wanderers and those who have lost their way, seeking recovery, people looking for daily or weekend spiritual retreats, many who have come to make a special visit to the St. Francis Chapel, the outdoor St. Anthony Shrine, or our founder, Fr. Paul of Graymoor's tomb, where they can enjoy in a special way the magnificent view from the top of the Holy Mountain.
So often after a visit here, visitors, pilgrims and guests say upon leaving that they were able to pray for the first time in years or that their insurmountable problems fell into perspective after they came.
If you haven't yet experienced Graymoor, I encourage you to do so. If you are driving on Route 9 in southern Putnam County and see a large crucifix and shrine, drive in, stay a while, become a pilgrim. Once you have enjoyed God's masterpiece in nature that we call the Holy Mountain — Graymoor — I think you will find refreshment for the soul, even healing. I also pray that your visit will become a special story for you also.

FRIARS NAME NEW AFFILIATE
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement named a new affiliate on July 19 in a ceremony in Brockton, Massachusetts. Maria Joia has been a great friend to the Friars of Chapel of Our Savior and their unique ministry to bring the Church to the people in a busy commercial mall area.
A Secular Franciscan, Ms. Joia has raised more than $10,000 to date with a monthly bake sale that she chairs to support the Chapel's ministry. In addition, she has helped to make the Friars in Brockton more cozy and has been the catalyst for many who attend the Chapel's Masses and prayer services to attend retreats at Graymoor.

FR. PAUL OF GRAYMOOR CAUSE FOR SAINTHOOD
The Congregation for the Causes of Saints has granted the the Archdiocese of New York a nihil obstat regarding the Cause of the Servant of God, Father Paul of Graymoor. This means that after a survey of the Vatican files nothing has been discovered to prevent the Cause from moving ahead. According to the Postulator of the Cause, Fr. Gabriel B. O'Donnell, O.P., the next step will take place when Cardinal Dolan officially opens the diocesan investigation into the life, virtue and work of Father Paul who is both Servant of God and Apostle of Christian unity and charity. This ceremony will take place later this year in the chancery office of the Archdiocese.
A Guild to support the Canonization of Father Paul Wattson is in the process of being formed, and we invite our benefactors to join and support Fr. Paul's cause. Request a prayer card for the Canonization of Father Paul.
The results of the lengthy diocesan study of the life and holiness of Father Paul will be forwarded to Rome where a new phase of the canonization process will begin in order to produce the positio, a printed volume containing the formal argument for a Servant of God's canonization. This will include a systematic biography of the Servant of God, a summary of the testimony of witnesses gathered during the diocesan phase and an essay on Father Paul's spirituality. |

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
Father Paul said in a sermon, "The cross Christ had a socket dug for it. It must have been a deep socket to keep the cross up while Christ was hanging there. We learn from that, that such is the compassion and mercy of Christ that he goes down into the very dregs and depths of sin. In his love he tries to lift up the sinner." Pope Francis has issued a Papal Bull declaring that from December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016, as an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Friars, whose ministry focuses on atonement and healing those who are broken, are planning special Masses, activities, retreats, a Franciscan Pilgrimage to Italy, and events coordinated with the Vatican's calendar for the year, at Graymoor and in their ministries around the world. The Jubilee Year of Mercy's theme is "Merciful Like the Father" and the focus will be on living the spiritual and corporal works of mercy set forth in our catechism. |
COME & SEE WEEKEND — FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS
Come & See Weekend allows single Catholic men, 18-40 years of age, to talk to friars about their journeys from their discernment to living God's call. If you believe you might be called to religious life and service to the Church as a brother or priest, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement invite you to Graymoor for the weekend of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 2-4, 2015), to participate in the Transitus devotion as it intensifies our commitment to follow Christ in the way of the poor man of Assisi, to see our Franciscan way of living and to learn about our charism of Christian Unity during final Come & See Weekend of the Year of Consecrated Life.
For more information, call the Vocation Director, (800) 338-2620, ext 2126 or email VocDirector@AtonementFriars.org. Visit with us! Get to know us! Imagine yourself a Friar...serving & helping others!
