You’ll find the word “ecumenism” found all over our website, and the idea of ecumenical dialogue has been a hot topic for a while. Wikipedia describes ecumenism as “efforts by Christians of different Church traditions to develop closer relationships and better understandings.”
While that’s a nice definition, ecumenism is about so much more for us. We desire a unity in Christian traditions that comes from a complete dependence on God’s grace and mercy. We believe building sincere relationships between denominations is both our privilege and our duty as disciples of Jesus Christ.
Our charism of unity is central to our mission as Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. We strive to be advocates for unity, both collectively and individually.
Why?
Because it’s much easier to be in unity with the Holy Spirit when we are at peace with the people God has created. Striving for better relationships with other people, especially those who are or seem different from us, develops our appreciation for the magnitude of God’s infinite love for all the earth.
