OBITUARY NOTICE:
Rev. Thomas C. Gumprecht, SA, Franciscan Friar of the Atonement

(March 21, 1941 – June 19, 2018)

(June 25, 2018—Graymoor, Garrison, NY)   Rev. Thomas C. Gumprecht, SA, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Paul Friary Chapel at Graymoor in Garrison, NY on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 11 a.m. Interment will take place on a date to be determined at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Columbarium in Apex, NC.

Fr. Gumprecht was born and raised in Meriden, CT.  After his graduation from Orville H. Platt High School in 1959, Fr. Gumprecht entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. He professed first vows in 1960 and made his final vows in 1963. Fr. Gumprecht was ordained to the priesthood in May 1968 in Garrison, NY by Bishop Joseph Pernicone.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy in 1964 from St. Pius X Seminary in Garrison, NY. He earned a Master’s Degree in Ecumenics in 1982 from the University of Hull in England.

In 1968, Fr. Gumprecht was assigned to parochial ministry at Paroquia Nossa Senhora das Dores, Rio Verde, Goias, Brazil. In 1971, he was named pastor of the parish and held that position until 1973. From 1973-1980, Fr. Gumprecht served at Sao Sebastiao Parish in the Diocese of Jatai, Goias, Brazil, first in parochial ministry and then as pastor. He moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil and lived there from 1981 – 1989, during which time he held various concurrent positions for the Archdiocese of Sao Paulo including Ecumenical and Formation Ministry (1983 – 1987), Pastor (1985 – 1998) and Novice Director (1987 – 1989).

Fr. Gumprecht was elected twice to the position of Vicar General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement and served in that role from 1989 – 1998 while based at the Friars’ generalate in Garrison, NY. He briefly served in Friar ministries in Italy (1998) and Ontario, Canada (1999). Fr. Gumprecht was pastor at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Yonkers, NY from 2000 – 2004. From 2006 – 2016, he served as Parochial Vicar for St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Apex, NC. From April 2016 until the time of his death, Fr. Gumprecht ministered part-time at Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling, VA.

Fr. Gumprecht was the son of the late Lionel and Irene (Lewoc) Gumprecht of Meriden, CT. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth D’Addario of Leesburg, FL.
