OBITUARY NOTICE:
Fr. Edward F. Boes, SA – Franciscan Friar of the Atonement
(July 31, 1959 – February 18, 2020)

(February 20, 2020 – Graymoor, Garrison, NY). Father Edward F. Boes, SA, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. A wake service is planned for Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the St. Anthony Chapel of the St. Paul Friary at Graymoor in Garrison, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 10 a.m. Interment in the Friars’ cemetery will immediately follow the Mass.

Fr. Boes was born on July 31, 1959 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended elementary school at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Ozone Park, NY and graduated from Archbishop Molloy High School, Jamaica, NY in 1977. He attended Cathedral College in Douglaston, NY and received a B.A. in Philosophy in 1981. In 1985, Fr. Boes earned an M.A. degree in Theology from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, NY. He attended Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC and received his Master of Divinity degree in 1997.

Fr. Boes entered the Friars of the Atonement in 1992 and received the habit in 1993. He made his first profession in 1994 and professed final vows in 1997. He was ordained in 1998 at Graymoor by Bishop Anthony F. Mestice.

Fr. Boes served the Fraternity as Associate Pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Vancouver, BC from 1996-2000. From 2000-2005, he was Novice Director at St. Francis Novitiate, Graymoor. He ministered at St. Joseph Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center in Saranac Lake, NY briefly in 2005 before returning to Garrison in April 2005 to work in the Vocation Formation office and the Retreat Department. Fr. Boes remained in that assignment until September 2009, when he was appointed Rector of Sant’Onofrio al Gianicolo Church in Rome, Italy. In addition to that position, Fr. Ed accepted the assignment of Novice Director for the Friars in January 2019.

Fr. Boes returned to Graymoor in December 2019 due to an illness. He was a resident of St. Paul Friary at the time of his death.

Fr. Boes is survived by his parents, Edward F. Boes, Sr. and Violet (DeLorenzis) Boes; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Michael Cassese; and his beloved nephew and niece, Thomas and Christine Cassese.
