Dan Egan Retreat
Friday, March 8 - Sunday, March 10
Getting its name from the “Junkie Priest”, aka the late Fr. Dan Egan SA, this retreat is a spiritual weekend for men and women recovering from drug addiction.
The Story Behind this Retreat
Our Dan Egan Retreat is named after the late Father Dan Egan. Whose work with addicts began in 1952, when he was preaching in a church in Manhattan and saw a troubled woman. She was addicted to narcotics and in need of help. He telephoned a number of hospitals in the city but none would take her. ”She was considered a criminal,” he said.
So Father Egan, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement, became a certified alcohol- and drug-abuse counselor and a chaplain of Narcotics Anonymous. In 1962, he founded Village Haven, a halfway house for women who were addicted to drugs, in Greenwich Village. Before long, 8 or 10 women a week, most of them newly released from jail, were going to Village Haven for help.
In 1970, he founded New Hope Manor at Graymoor for teenage girls who were addicted to drugs. Over the years, he also worked as program director at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center at Saranac Lake, N.Y., and in programs elsewhere. He had received various honors, including awards for pioneering anti-drug programs in the armed forces and was the subject of a biographical book published in 1970 called The Junkie Priest by John D. Harris.
Here at the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center we continue his commitment to help both men and women recovering from drug addiction. Join us for a weekend that includes meetings, conferences and workshops with a focus on prayer and meditation, the 12 steps and spiritual principles. Within a group setting our intention will be to improve one’s spiritual condition as an addict in recovery. Whether you are new to recovery or someone that has been in recovery for years, our retreat can help to do something good for yourself and your recovery.
The Dan Egan Retreat costs $175.00 per person for a double room (you & your roommate must sign up and put a deposit down to qualify for a double room price) and $250.00 per person for a single room. Both fees include all content of our retreat, the two overnight stays and all meals starting with Saturday’s breakfast and ending with lunch on Sunday. The Center has vending machines with snacks and beverages but you are welcomed to bring your own and store it in our guest lounge refrigerators. Towels, linens and one pillow per bed are provided and bathrobes are recommended for shower use. Please bring your own alarm clock, any extra pillows and toiletries you may need.
Pre-registration is required as retreats are limited in number of participants. If registering through the mail, please call 845-424-2111 to verify beforehand that space is still available. The deadline for registration is one week before the retreat. A $75 deposit per person is due at the time of registration and is non-refundable or transferable should you cancel for ANY reason. We appreciate payment in full at the time of registration as it will make the registration process go faster on the day of your arrival, but we do not require it.
