IN THIS ISSUE:
CELEBRATING FOREVER Forever used to be a household word, but nowadays it seems a little unreal. Many will tell you that nothing lasts forever. But, all sorts of people have said “forever” to a person or an institution or to God. But times change, ideals die, neighborhoods go down, governments topple. New offers are too attractive to pass up – for quarterbacks, coaches, executives or marriages. Sadly, forever is not a thunderous promise but often a tremulous hope. All these thoughts were going through my mind as I attended the Jubilee Celebration for fourteen of our friars. Combined they had spent 595 years of service to God and His Church. They are men who entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement 25, 50, 60 years ago. The list of their accomplishments in the service of the Lord is stellar, although they would deny it. They are friars who have been tireless in their many ministries and many are still active. They are faithful men who many years before could not know what lay in their future, but still trusting the Lord said “forever.” Yours in Christ, On Wednesday June 10, 2009, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement re-elected V. Rev. James F. Puglisi, SA, to a second term as Minister General at their General Chapter. Elected to the General Council were Fr. Timothy MacDonald, SA, Vicar General and First Councilor; Fr. Elias D. Mallon, SA, Second Councilor; Bro. Kevin Goss, SA, Third Councilor; and Fr. Paul Ojibway, SA, Fourth Councilor. On Friday, October 2, the friars are hosting their annual Sharing Hope Celebration Dinner at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. His Excellency Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan who was installed in April as Archbishop of New York will be honored. At the dinner, Graymoor Awards are presented to individuals who embody the friars’ mission, charism, and who have shown a commitment to helping others and inspiring hope. FRIARS OBSERVE JUBILEES AT GRAYMOOR – CELEBRATING SERVICE TO GODOn June 27, 14 friars celebrated jubilees, marking their arrivals at Graymoor and the start of their religious careers. Most Rev. Paul Bootkoski, DD, Bishop of Metuchen presided at the Mass. V. Rev. James F. Puglisi, SA, Minister General, was the principal celebrant and homilist. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE JUBILEE CELEBRATION >> He is not only a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement and the pastor at St. Joan of Arc parish in Toronto, he is also a highly accomplished tri-athlete. On July 26, he will compete in his 11th Ironman competition at Lake Placid. His distinctive combination of spiritual and physical stamina has earned him the nickname "Iron Friar." Fr. Callahan takes part in the event to raise money for various causes including the rehabilitation and healing ministries of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor. HELP THE IRON FRIAR MEET HIS GOAL OF RAISING $10,000 FOR THE FRIARS >> Every year on July 9, the Friars celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Atonement at Graymoor in special honor of Our Lady of the Atonement. This particular name of Our Blessed Mother is very dear to us and we believe it is dear to Our Lady herself. We hold it as among the most treasured and sacred traditions of our Institute that it was the Blessed Virgin who first taught us to call her by that name and there are cogent reasons why she should give this title a favorite place among the many by which she is invoked.
