The question often put before us during Lent is “what are you giving up this Lent?” The answer I propose is that I am not giving up anything, I am GIVING something. We are challenged to give up our sinful lives, this is true, but it doesn’t have to mean giving up. To turn around from the world of me to a world of you and me can be just as redemptive as any act of fasting or letting go of chocolate or hurtful words. Why not let Lent be a time of giving of yourself more freely, of caring for your brothers’ and sisters’ needs, of witnessing to what Christ does for us each day? We don’t have to give up…we can give and discover there the presence of God’s redeeming love. Let us live our lives in imitation of Jesus’ love, mercy and forgiveness today and every day.
