ST. ANTHONY – OUR BIG BROTHER

Greetings from Fr. Bob ...

Once again the feast of St. Anthony of Padua will be celebrated at Graymoor and as in past years the weekend closest to the feast day will see thousands of pilgrims travel to Graymoor.

It is amazing how many people of different backgrounds and cultures think of St. Anthony as their Saint.

Anthony has been for centuries the patron of those who find their lives completely uprooted and set in a new and unexpected direction. Like all saints, he is a perfect example of turning one’s life completely over to Christ. God did with Anthony as God pleased – and what God pleased was a life of spiritual power and brilliance that still attracts thousands.

He whom popular devotion has nominated as finder of lost objects found himself by losing himself totally to the providence of God. St. Bonaventure once said of St. Anthony: “He possessed the science of the angels, the faith of the patriarchs, the foreknowledge of the prophets, the zeal of the apostles and the heroism of the martyrs.”

When we Friars at Graymoor speak of St. Anthony, we just call him our big brother.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Bob Warren
